Today’s talk by Peter Jackson at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival

Peter Jackson defended AI as a creative tool at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, stressing that actor consent is critical when using digital duplicates.

"AI used in the right way, it’s just a tool like any other tool. But like anything, it’s going to come down to the imagination and originality of the person, you know, feeding the instructions into the AI program. [...] Some people will make really, really great films, and some people will do the exact same process, and their film will be crap — just like normal films. I don’t dislike it at all. I mean, to me, it’s just a special effect. It’s no different from other special effects. The only thing with AI that I think is absolutely critical is that you don’t do an AI version of an actor without their own approval. [...] If you’re doing an AI duplicate of somebody, like Indiana Jones or anyone else, as long as you’ve licensed the rights off the person who you’re showing, I don’t see the issue. It’s when people’s likenesses get stolen and usurped."
