SpaceX’s acquisition of Cursor prompts OpenAI to pull its models
OpenAI plans to remove its models from Cursor on November 12 following the SpaceX acquisition. They account for roughly 5% of Cursor’s traffic.
OpenAI models are expected to disappear from Cursor three months after the coding editor was acquired by SpaceX. OpenAI has notified Cursor’s new owner that it intends to terminate the agreement providing the platform with direct access to its models. The proposed shutoff date is November 12, 2026.
The withdrawal will not take effect immediately. Developers can continue selecting the OpenAI models currently available in Cursor during the notice period. Cursor’s documentation presently lists GPT‑5.6 Luna, Terra, and Sol, with several speed and context options. OpenAI has said, however, that no future models will be added to the platform.
The decision comes two weeks after SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor. Announced in June and conducted entirely in stock, the transaction valued Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, at $60 billion. Cursor became a SpaceX subsidiary on August 14, joining the same corporate group as X and xAI.
OpenAI’s agreement with Cursor contained a provision covering a change of control. That clause opened a limited period during which OpenAI could cancel the contract following the arrival of a new owner. The company says it selected the latest date allowed under the agreement to extend access for users.
OpenAI is not accusing Cursor of violating its terms. Its concerns are directed at SpaceX and other companies controlled by Elon Musk. OpenAI says it cannot be sufficiently confident that its technology will be used in compliance with its rules once Cursor is integrated into the group.
The company cites two precedents. The first dates back to Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022. According to OpenAI’s account, the platform, later renamed X and integrated into SpaceX, breached an agreement providing access to its data. The second concerns xAI’s use of responses generated by OpenAI models to train competing systems.
While testifying under oath in April 2026, Elon Musk acknowledged that xAI had “partly” used OpenAI technology to train its own models. The practice, known as distillation, uses one model’s outputs as training material for another. OpenAI’s terms prohibit using its outputs to develop a competing service.
The public language chosen by OpenAI is unusual for the termination of a commercial agreement. Rather than citing only a contractual provision or strategic disagreement, the company openly says it does not trust Cursor’s new owner to honor its commitments. The decision extends the long-running conflict between Elon Musk and OpenAI’s leadership, but this time with direct consequences for a service used daily by developers.
The upcoming Astra model also features in OpenAI’s reasoning. The company says it cannot rule out Astra reaching the “Critical” cybersecurity capability threshold. This level refers to the ability to discover previously unknown vulnerabilities in hardened systems or conduct a complete attack with minimal human involvement.
OpenAI is therefore applying stricter requirements to partners that may integrate the model. By ending the agreement, it will prevent Cursor from receiving Astra under the same conditions as previous generations. The argument goes beyond maintaining a product catalog: OpenAI views access to its future models as a responsibility that must remain subject to contractual and technical safeguards.
Astra has not yet been released and was not involved in the recent incident in which OpenAI research agents compromised part of Hugging Face’s infrastructure. Its inclusion in the statement shows that the termination concerns future capabilities as much as the models already available.
Cursor is still trying to prevent the shutoff. A company representative says discussions with OpenAI are continuing and has promised further updates on continuity of access. November 12 remains OpenAI’s proposed date, although no negotiated alternative has been announced.
The quantitative impact should remain limited. Cursor says OpenAI models account for roughly 5% of its total user traffic. That figure suggests most sessions already run through Cursor’s own models or those supplied by Anthropic, Google, Meta, and SpaceXAI.
Cursor’s current model catalog places GPT models alongside Claude Sonnet, Opus, and Fable, Gemini Pro and Flash, Grok 4.5 and 4.6, and Composer 2.5. Cursor says it will continue offering these models through direct partnerships with their respective providers.
Anthropic quickly indicated that it would increase the computing capacity allocated to Claude models in Cursor. This reduces the risk of resource shortages if some GPT users migrate to its models. It also shows that OpenAI’s distrust of SpaceX is not uniformly shared by other AI labs: Anthropic is maintaining its own agreement with Musk’s group.
The 5% figure does not capture every consequence. Some teams may have built rules, evaluations, or automated workflows around a particular GPT model. Replacing it with Claude, Gemini, Grok, or Composer may change how instructions are followed, tools are called, files are edited, and costs are calculated. A small share of overall traffic can still represent professional workloads that are difficult to migrate.
Cursor has not yet explained whether users will be able to keep connecting their own OpenAI API keys after the direct agreement ends. Its documentation mentions billing for bring-your-own-key usage, but there is no guarantee that this option will remain available for the affected models after November 12. The distinction matters: ending the agreement could remove either Cursor’s integrated distribution or all OpenAI model access from within the application.
The termination does not affect OpenAI’s general API, ChatGPT, or Codex. Developers will still be able to use those services separately, provided they have an account and comply with their terms. The decision targets the commercial partnership that authorizes Cursor to integrate and redistribute OpenAI models through its own product.
