Shopify launches official apps for ChatGPT and Claude
Shopify launches official apps for ChatGPT and Claude, enabling merchants to manage inventory, products, and analytics directly through conversational AI.
Shopify has released two official apps that allow managing an online store directly from ChatGPT or Claude, without going through the admin interface. The exposed functions cover viewing analytics and performance metrics, adding products with their descriptions, prices, visuals, and variants, updating inventory and locations, creating promotional codes, searching orders, and viewing customer information.
Installation is done from each assistant's app directory, namely `chatgpt.com/apps/shopify` for OpenAI and `claude.ai/directory/connectors/shopify` for Anthropic. The merchant activates the connection, is redirected to their Shopify admin to validate the desired permissions (read-only or edit), then dialogues with the application by addressing @Shopify in the conversation thread. Data access operates in real time, within the limits of the granted permissions.
Both integrations are free. Data leaves the Shopify environment to be processed by OpenAI or Anthropic depending on the client used, which requires reviewing the respective privacy policies. Shopify distinguishes these apps from its AI Toolkit released in April, which is intended for developers working in Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code: the new apps target merchants without technical skills, capable of operating their store from a phone via conversation.
