Reception answers the phone and fills the calendar for small businesses

ElevenLabs launches Reception, an AI phone receptionist available 24/7, capable of answering customers, qualifying their requests, and booking appointments.

A missed call can mean a leaking pipe handed to the next plumber, a property viewing that never gets scheduled, or a new customer choosing another salon. ElevenLabs wants to eliminate that trip to voicemail with Reception, an AI receptionist designed for small businesses.

Launched on September 16, 2026, the service answers incoming calls, provides information based on business data, checks staff availability, and adds appointments to a calendar. It can operate around the clock, only outside business hours, or whenever no one answers.

Reception is a preconfigured version of ElevenAgents, ElevenLabs’ voice-agent platform. Businesses do not need to build their own assistant, select every voice component, or develop telephony infrastructure. The company has assembled those elements into a product focused on reception and appointment scheduling.

Setup begins with the company’s website address. Reception attempts to extract its services, hours, contact details, and other information callers may need. The user then selects a voice, connects a calendar, reviews the imported data, and can make an initial test call.

ElevenLabs claims this setup takes approximately five minutes. That timeframe mainly covers the technical creation of a first agent. Preparing a reliable receptionist takes more work when a business has multiple prices, specific service areas, varying appointment lengths, emergency procedures, exceptions, or requests that must be transferred to a person.

A plumber, for example, will need to specify which services are actually available, the areas covered, and what the assistant should do in the event of a leak. A practice will need to define appointment types, available professionals, and the information the assistant must not provide. A real estate agency will need to distinguish between properties that are still available and listings that remain online by mistake.

Once configured, Reception answers questions expressed in natural language. Callers can ask about business hours, location, service prices, or upcoming availability without navigating a touch-tone menu. The system interprets the request, consults the business information, and delivers an answer using an ElevenLabs-generated voice.

The service advertises support for more than 70 languages. This coverage could help businesses serving international customers, provided the information used by the agent is available in the relevant languages and names, addresses, prices, and industry terms are pronounced correctly.

The number of supported languages alone does not measure conversational quality. ElevenLabs has not published language-specific comprehension rates for Reception, results involving regional accents, or comparisons between calls placed in quiet environments and those made from a street, vehicle, or jobsite.

The main difference from conventional voicemail appears when a customer wants to take action. Reception can identify the type of appointment being requested, ask follow-up questions, check available time slots, and confirm a booking before the call ends.

Appointments are added to the connected calendar. A public booking page also allows customers to schedule online, while the different channels are meant to share the same availability to prevent a time slot from being booked twice.

After each conversation, the business can access a summary, transcript, and audio recording. These materials can help staff prepare for an appointment, call a prospect back, or review how the assistant handled a request.

Reception can use a dedicated line or receive calls forwarded from an existing business number. A company can therefore continue answering calls during regular hours, then redirect unanswered calls or those received after closing.

Routing can also account for individual teams and locations. The highest-tier plan supports multiple locations, while rules can direct a call to a particular branch, staff member, or calendar.

The assistant can also connect to external services through Zapier, webhooks, and MCP integrations. These connections can, for example, send prospect details to a customer relationship management tool, trigger a confirmation message, or forward a request to an internal application.

This capability makes the service more than a voice that recites business hours. The agent can trigger actions inside company software. It also raises the consequences of a misunderstanding: an error can become an incorrect appointment, an incomplete customer record, or a request sent to the wrong department.

Published information should therefore be reviewed before the line goes live. Businesses should also test ambiguous requests, difficult names, language changes, interruptions, and situations in which the agent needs to recognize its limits.

ElevenLabs positions Reception for home-service providers, professional practices, IT companies, real estate agencies, property managers, automotive businesses, salons, studios, hospitality companies, and certain healthcare operations.

The functions may be similar across industries, but the consequences are not. Confusing two appointment times at a salon creates an inconvenience. Misinterpreting a medical, legal, or emergency-related request may expose the caller to a more serious risk.

Reception should not be mistaken for a professional capable of making a diagnosis, providing regulated advice, or handling an emergency. Its role is to collect information, answer prepared questions, schedule appointments, and route requests.

The product page claims the service can replace an outsourced answering service for most small businesses. That comparison is incomplete. A human receptionist can understand an unusual situation, recognize distress, negotiate an exception, coordinate several people, or perform physical duties that extend beyond a phone conversation.

ElevenLabs acknowledges this indirectly in its wage comparison. The website compares Reception with the $3,167 monthly equivalent of the 2025 US median
