OpenAI Foundation launches its AI Resilience program with $130 million in grants to tackle bio-resilience, cyber-resilience, model safety, and youth.

The OpenAI Foundation is introducing its next major undertaking, dubbed AI Resilience: building an ecosystem capable of absorbing AI risks as its capabilities advance, so that society can benefit from it. Over $130 million in grants are currently being finalized as part of this initiative, with recipients to be announced soon.

The program initially focuses on four areas. Bio-resilience seeks to prevent potential pandemics linked to artificially engineered pathogens, by focusing on pathogen-agnostic defenses. Cyber-resilience aims to protect critical systems, particularly those least equipped to rapidly deploy AI-assisted defenses. Model safety focuses on controlling increasingly autonomous systems, through independent evaluation institutions and advancements in alignment. The final component concerns the impact of AI on youth, with an independent research effort on learning, development, and social connection.

This initiative complements other Foundation programs, dedicated to life sciences and the transformation of employment, as part of a plan that foresees over a billion dollars in investments over the coming year and twenty-five billion in the longer term for resilience and life sciences.
