OpenAI Economic Research Exchange, Call for Proposals on AI and Economics

OpenAI launches the Economic Research Exchange, a program granting external researchers access to its tools and data to study the economic impacts of AI.

Measuring the effects of AI on work, businesses, and the economy requires more than isolated observations. This is the rationale behind the Economic Research Exchange, a program through which OpenAI opens its tools and datasets to external researchers. The principle: structured, project-by-project collaborations with the OpenAI Economic Research team, to produce independent empirical work on how AI impacts workers, firms, institutions, and the broader economy.

Each selected project is delimited, with defined milestones, data governance, and a review process, with access to tools remaining controlled to preserve user confidentiality. Desired profiles include applied causal inference, labor economics, productivity, education, entrepreneurship, public finance, or inequality.

The initiative extends OpenAI Signals and other internal measurement work. Applications are open until July 5th, with selected researchers being notified by the end of the month.
