Netflix is setting up an internal animation studio based on generative AI.

Netflix is building INKubator, an internal animation studio led by Serrena Iyer that natively uses generative AI to produce short-form and feature films.

Several recent job postings and LinkedIn reports spotted by Janko Roettgers in his Lowpass newsletter, published by The Verge, indicate that Netflix is internally structuring a new entity named INKubator, sometimes shortened to INK. The unit is reportedly conceived as an animation studio natively relying on generative AI, starting with short-form content but with a stated ambition to eventually target feature-film level productions. The streamer has not publicly confirmed the project and did not respond to the media's inquiries.

The initial hires include profiles in production, software engineering, and 3D graphic arts. Leadership has been entrusted to Serrena Iyer, whose background includes strategic and operational roles at DreamWorks Animation, MRC Studios, and then A24 Films. According to associated LinkedIn profiles, the team quietly formed as early as March.

The job descriptions detail a technological roadmap centered around production pipelines assisted by generative models, tools dedicated to artists, and shared work environments for multiple series in parallel, with a requirement for content security.

The initiative differs from InterPositive, the startup founded by Ben Affleck and acquired by Netflix earlier this year, which focused on post-production. INKubator operates higher up the chain, at the very level of conception and creation of the works.
