Midjourney pivots into medical imaging, leveraging scanners and spas.
Midjourney Medical launches Ultrasonic CT, a radiation-free 3D body scanner based on Butterfly Network tech, debuting in San Francisco spas by late 2027.
This is a direction no one expected from the generative image specialist. Midjourney is establishing a health division, Midjourney Medical, built around an imaging technology it calls "Ultrasonic CT," or whole-body ultrasound. The company's promise is simple: no radiation, no magnetic fields, just sound, water, and about sixty seconds to obtain a 3D body map that the company claims is close to current MRI images.
The process evokes a wellness treatment more than a medical examination. One lies down on a platform that slowly descends into a basin of lukewarm water, at a few centimeters per second, and passes through a ring of miniature sensors, each alternately acting as a speaker and a microphone. According to Midjourney, nearly half a million of these elements emit ultrasounds and record their echoes millions of times per second, producing terabytes of data; a computing cluster then reconstructs, from the wave deformation, what is inside. The company claims a quality in some areas superior to MRI and a speed approximately one hundred times greater, on a device that actually relies on an ultrasound-on-chip technology licensed from Butterfly Network.
This machine would not reside in a hospital but in a wellness center, the "Midjourney Spa." The first would open in San Francisco at the end of 2027, featuring hammams, saunas, cold plunges, and about ten scanners housed in basins of golden light. The stated idea is to make it a place where one comes for oneself, with the scan being just an adjunct to the visit, from which one leaves with a repository of health data.
The roadmap remains one of nascent ambition, not a product. Midjourney plans to spend a year refining hardware and algorithms, developing successive generations of scanners, and ultimately aiming for a fleet of 50,000 devices for one billion examinations per month by 2031. Lacking approval, it would start with simple body composition maps, without diagnostic intent, by submitting its results to the FDA to gradually expand its uses. The company, which states it has no investors and is funded by its community, goes so far as to suggest, conditionally, that widespread early imaging could prevent 30% of future deaths and half of healthcare costs—a speculative projection for which it alone is responsible.
