[I/O 2026] Google expands its tools to trace the origin of content
Google expands SynthID and C2PA Content Credentials to Gemini, Search, and Chrome to trace the origin of AI-generated and camera-captured media.
Google is expanding its content transparency and verification tools to Search, Gemini, Chrome, Pixel, and Cloud, while also strengthening its ties with the rest of the industry. Central to this initiative is SynthID, its digital watermark introduced three years ago, which has marked over 100 billion images and videos, as well as 60,000 years of audio. Concurrently, the C2PA Content Credentials standard documents how a piece of media was created or modified, with or without AI: after photos on Pixel 10, these metadata are now extending to video on Pixel 8, 9, and 10. The goal is also to attest to authentic, unretouched content, identified from the moment of capture.
On the verification front, the SynthID feature of the Gemini app, already accessed 50 million times, is coming to Search and soon to Chrome. A simple question, such as “Is this AI-generated?”, asked via Lens, AI mode, Circle to Search, or Gemini in Chrome, allows users to trace an image's origin. Content Credentials verification, to determine if a file is a camera original or if it has been modified and with what tools, is starting in Gemini before expanding to Search and Chrome.
This is a collective effort. OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs are adopting SynthID for some of their content, following the open-sourcing of the text watermark and a partnership with NVIDIA on videos from its Cosmos models. Google is also making an AI content detection API available on its Gemini Enterprise platform, designed to help businesses identify synthetic media, from moderation to fraud prevention. Finally, as a member of the C2PA committee, the group reports that Meta will begin labeling camera-captured media on Instagram, including native photos and videos from Pixel devices.
