Ideogram 4.0 leads open-weight text-to-image models on DesignArena, offering native 2K resolution, precise text rendering, and downloadable weights.

Available with open weights, Ideogram 4.0 is currently positioned as one of the best open image generation models. According to the independent DesignArena ranking, it leads open-weight text-to-image models, just behind OpenAI's and Google's closed models.

Among its claimed strengths: particularly dense and precise text rendering, native 2K resolution, native background transparency, as well as fine layout control. Training relies on bounding boxes associated with textual descriptions of areas, which allows the model to learn to precisely position objects, text blocks, and compositional elements.

The weights are downloadable, can be fine-tuned on your own data, and run on your infrastructure. The model also remains accessible via Ideogram's offerings and its API, available in three image-based billing tiers (from $0.03 to $0.10). Text editing, layer movement, and full image editing are planned for a future version.

Criticisms target photorealism, deemed merely acceptable: sometimes glossy skin, subdued cinematic rendering, fine details relying on the upscaler—all points that leave it behind GPT-Image-2, Nano Banana Pro, or Luma Uni-1.1 in blind tests on complex scenes. The license is also divisive: a portion of the community, which expected full open source, regrets that commercial exploitation of the weights remains paid.
