Former Justice Joins Anthropic to Lead Global Affairs

Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar is joining Anthropic to lead public policy, international engagement, and government relations.

Mariano-Florentino “Tino” Cuéllar will become Anthropic’s first Chief Global Affairs Officer. He will lead the company’s work on public policy, government relations, and strategic international engagement.

A former president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former Justice of the Supreme Court of California, he has also held several positions at Stanford in law, international security, and cybersecurity. His career includes roles across multiple U.S. presidential administrations and federal advisory bodies.

Cuéllar has also co-chaired a bipartisan task force on nuclear proliferation and served on California’s Frontier AI Working Group. He currently teaches at Stanford Law School and is a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.

Since January, he had served as a trustee of Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, which contributes to the company’s long-term governance. He is stepping down from that role to join Anthropic directly, and the Trust will appoint a successor through its standard process.
