Foreign access to Chinese models could tighten
China may restrict foreign access to advanced AI models to protect proprietary tech and national security.
According to Reuters, Chinese authorities gathered several tech players, including Alibaba, ByteDance, and Z.ai, to discuss a potential tightening of foreign access to China's most advanced AI models.
The discussions reportedly covered both closed and open-weight models, with a sensitive point being to prevent capabilities developed in China from circulating too easily outside the country. The exchanges also reportedly addressed increased penalties for leaks or theft of proprietary technologies, as well as possible restrictions on funding for Chinese AI startups.
Nothing has been finalized yet, and the scope might only concern future models. But the shift is clear: after chips and talent, the models themselves are entering the lexicon of national security.
