FLUX 3 Image locks in edits without regenerating the rest of the image

Black Forest Labs adds to FLUX 3 a model dedicated to image generation and editing, featuring localized inpainting, bounding box composition, up to ten references, and native 2K and 4K generation. A Commercial Weights license accompanies this version, ahead of the release of an Open Weights variant.

Modifying an Area Without Touching the Rest

Changing an element in a generated image can still lead to variations elsewhere in the composition. With FLUX 3 Image, Black Forest Labs directly targets this issue by preserving the parts that are not affected by the request.

An area can be redescribed, replaced, or moved while the rest of the image remains in its initial position. The workflow is designed to support multiple successive edits without systematically rebuilding the entire composition with each modification.

The model also covers text-to-image and image-to-image generation, with a focus on text integrated into the visuals and detailed realism. Bounding Boxes to Build the Composition

The placement of elements can be defined even before generation. Each subject receives a bounding box and an identifier on a canvas organized according to a grid ranging from 0 to 1000 on each axis.

The user can draw these areas manually or let an LLM prepare the composition from a prompt and an aspect ratio. It then remains possible to move each bounding box before generating the image.

This system is also used for editing. An existing area can receive a new description or change position without requiring the model to re-interpret the entire scene. Up to Ten Reference Images

A generation can integrate up to ten references. Each receives an identifier that can be used in the prompt to specify which elements to carry over and their role in the new composition.

For example, Black Forest Labs shows several clothing items and accessories from separate images combined into a single portrait. The model then decides on their size and placement, except when these are explicitly defined using bounding boxes.

This combination brings multi-reference composition and spatial control of each element together into a single workflow. From Native 2K to 4K

FLUX 3 Image directly produces images in 2K and 4K, without going through a separate upscaling step. Black Forest Labs illustrates this capability with an image of 5456 × 3072 pixels, or 16.8 megapixels.

The benefit particularly concerns fine details, faces, textures, or small text. The resolution is part of the generation itself rather than a treatment added afterward. Commercial Weights Before the Open Weights Version

Companies wishing to run the model on their own infrastructure can obtain FLUX 3 Image under a Commercial Weights license. This allows for fine-tuning and internal deployment for large-scale generation use cases.

Black Forest Labs also plans an Open Weights version in the coming weeks. The exact terms of this future license have not yet been detailed.

FLUX 3 Image is already accessible via the Black Forest Labs API. Its use benefits from a temporary 50% discount until October 8.
