Contracts, case law, and DSARs move into Gemini Enterprise

Gemini Enterprise for Legal combines agents, skills, and connectors to automate contracts, legal research, and DSARs under firm oversight.

Comparing a contract against a firm’s internal rules, suggesting redlines, monitoring regulatory developments, or locating the personal data required to fulfill an access request. Gemini Enterprise for Legal brings these operations into an environment designed for law firms and in-house legal departments.

The new offering is not based on a version of Gemini reserved exclusively for legal work. Google is instead adding an industry-specific layer to its existing infrastructure, combining specialized instructions, connections to legal software, ready-to-use agents, and governance tools. The goal is to let teams work from a single interface without manually transferring documents between several assistants.

This structure separates the offering from a basic legal chatbot. Gemini Enterprise for Legal can find information, compare it against an organization’s rules, produce a document, and trigger another step in a connected service. The model remains central to the reasoning process, but execution depends on the surrounding data, permissions, and software.

Google organizes this legal layer around four components. The first consists of skills, reusable packages of instructions and context designed with domain specialists. An organization can use them to encode its contract templates, negotiation positions, citation rules, terminology, and preferred method for flagging risk.

A skill dedicated to nondisclosure agreements could, for example, define acceptable clauses, language that should be rejected, and fallback positions approved by the legal department. The agent would no longer analyze the document using general instructions. It would compare it against the framework selected by the organization.

The proposed workflows cover contract review and redlining, playbook creation, legal research, regulatory monitoring, and Data Subject Access Request fulfillment. The platform can also prepare redacted documents for motions to seal or generate an initial draft of a nondisclosure agreement.

For regulatory monitoring, an agent can track legislation, court decisions, and publications from supervisory authorities. It then compares detected changes against company policies, flags possible gaps, and prepares proposed updates. The resulting document remains subject to review by a qualified professional before adoption.

DSAR processing further illustrates the product’s operational dimension. The agent must locate information across several connected services, compile it, and prepare a response. The effectiveness of this operation depends as much on the quality of the connections and the organization of the data as it does on the model’s capabilities.

The second component concerns these connections. Connectors based on the Model Context Protocol give agents controlled access to the software that legal teams already use. Google lists Workspace, Microsoft 365, iManage, NetDocuments, Docusign, Everlaw, RelativityOne, and Thomson Reuters HighQ.

The ecosystem also includes CourtListener, the Free Law Project database of case law and court records, along with Courtroom5 for civil procedure rules and deadline calculations. Solve Intelligence provides sources related to patents, while Harvey and Legora can contribute their own research, review, and drafting capabilities.

The inclusion of Harvey and Legora is significant. Google is not only attempting to compete with established legal AI specialists. Gemini Enterprise can also become the orchestration layer connecting their services to internal data, access policies, and an organization’s other agents.

The connectors are intended to preserve the permissions already configured in each service. A person should therefore be unable to query a matter through Gemini Enterprise if they cannot access it in iManage or NetDocuments. Google also says the platform can inherit ethical walls and document-level permissions.

This continuity removes the need to rebuild every permission in a second system. It does not, however, correct an improper configuration in the original software. A document that is shared too broadly at the source may remain accessible to the agent. Law firms will therefore need to audit existing permissions before connecting their archives.

Protections may also differ between services. Google states, for example, that source documents do not leave the governed NetDocuments environment. That statement applies specifically to this connector and should not automatically be extended to every integration. Data flows, logs, and third-party provider terms will need to be assessed individually.

The third component consists of agents supplied by Google or its partners. They can conduct legal research, review a contract, check it against a playbook, or prepare an initial draft. Some actions are limited to reading and summarization, while others may modify a document or send a result into an approval workflow.

Deloitte provides Contract Summarize Pro for contract summaries and Clause Guard for suggested redlines. Eudia Knowledge combines research, document analysis, and regulatory screening. These agents can operate alongside those built directly by a law firm while being administered through the same platform.

Gemini Enterprise for Legal relies on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, the evolution of Vertex AI focused on building and managing agents. The infrastructure includes a centralized registry, separate identities for agents, a control point for tool calls, and monitoring and evaluation features.

Each agent can therefore receive different permissions. An agent conducting case law research does not necessarily need the ability to modify a contract. Another may be authorized to prepare a document but prevented from sending or publishing it without approval.
