ChatGPT advertising expands to five new markets
ChatGPT is expanding ads to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea, exclusively for users on the Free and Go plans.
After its initial tests in the United States, followed by expansion to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, advertising in ChatGPT is now arriving in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. OpenAI says it plans to continue expanding into additional markets throughout the year.
Ads apply to adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscriptions remain ad-free. Users on the Free plan can also turn off ads in exchange for a lower number of free daily messages.
Ad selection may take into account the topic of the conversation, previous chats, and past interactions with ads. OpenAI says, however, that ads remain separate from ChatGPT responses and do not influence their content. Advertisers do not have access to conversations, conversation history, memories, or users’ personal information, and only receive aggregated performance data such as views and clicks.
The system also includes restrictions: ads are not shown on accounts identified as belonging to minors, or alongside conversations involving certain sensitive or regulated topics, including health, mental health, and politics.
On the advertiser side, OpenAI is gradually opening its advertising program to businesses and plans to expand the available formats, objectives, and buying methods over time. Ads Manager is already available in several markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea.
