ByteDance releases Seed2.1, its family of agentic models for productivity

ByteDance releases Seed2.1 and Seed2.1 Pro, agentic AI models for Doubao and Volcano Engine that automate workflows across Notion, Canva, and Figma.

Seed2.1, the new generation of its Seed model family, is introduced as a range of agentic models designed for real-world productivity. Access is open via the Doubao app and the Volcano Engine cloud platform, with two main variants, Seed2.1 and Seed2.1 Pro, the latter targeting the most demanding tasks.

The publisher structures the new features around three key areas. First, more reliable general-purpose agent capabilities, able to chain multi-step workflows across multiple tools and environments: project planning, document processing, research, navigation, files, and external tool calls. Second, an end-to-end software development chain, from requirements analysis to bug fixing and validation. Finally, enhanced multimodal understanding, for complex documents as well as video.

ByteDance adopts an evaluation approach: the firm states it measures its models on real-world workflows rather than on isolated benchmark scores alone. It claims a 16% reduction in the average number of steps required to complete a task, and positions Seed2.1 Pro at the top of the GDPVal test, which evaluates the economic value of deliverables produced under conditions close to real-world work.

One point will capture the attention of studios and agencies: the model is evaluated on its ability to control Notion, Canva, and Figma, switching autonomously between graphical interface and tools, to manage documents, produce visuals, or edit interfaces. The publisher also promotes its Seed for Seed initiative, where the model participates in its own development, from evaluation to training.

ByteDance acknowledges room for improvement on the most challenging open-ended tasks and cutting-edge research. Finally, it should be noted that this announcement concerns the agentic Seed lineage, distinct from the Seedance video branch, which remains at version 2.0 despite recent rumors surrounding a hypothetical 2.5.
