Anthropic extends Claude Desktop to Linux in beta (Ubuntu and Debian)

Anthropic launches Claude Desktop in beta for Linux (Ubuntu and Debian), bringing parallel sessions and Claude Code to paid users via apt or a .deb package.

Anthropic's desktop application gains Linux support, in beta, for Ubuntu and Debian distributions. Claude Desktop thus joins the browser and terminal as an access point, with the same tabs as on macOS and Windows: Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code. The environment includes functions already present elsewhere, namely parallel sessions, visual diff review, an integrated terminal and editor, as well as a live application preview. Access is open to all paid offerings.

Regarding prerequisites, Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, or Debian 12 or newer, is required, on x8664 or arm64 architecture. Installation is done via Anthropic's apt repository, which allows receiving updates with system updates, or via a manually downloaded .deb package. On Linux, the application does not update itself.

This beta comes with several omissions. Computer Use is not included in this version, with its arrival announced for later. Voice dictation is also not available and remains accessible via the CLI. The global Quick Entry shortcut works under X11 but requires a dedicated portal under native Wayland. Fedora and RHEL are not yet covered; only Debian-derived distributions are for now.
